Empty agendas leave plenty of time to explore new interests. “Membership and interest in homebrewing follows the unemployment rate,” Florez said. Their ranks are growing, with plenty of would-be beer barons taking up the hobby. Founded in 1994, CMI is a club of about 40 members who meet every month to share notes about their homebrewed creations. “It's a little math, a little science, a little cooking, and – (once) you learn the basics – it's a little art,” said Michael Florez of Cincinnati Malt Infusers, or CMI. Known for standouts like their Chickow! Brown Ale and Nutcase Peanut Butter Porter, the brewery has also developed a cult following for its top-shelf New England IPAs. Dan Listermann turned the homebrew supply store that he opened in the 1990s into a taproom, and has been producing some of the city’s best beer since 2008.
